Lakeland College and Portage College Open Doors for Environment Sciences Diploma Grads

Portage College graduates pursuing careers in the environmental sciences field can now turn their two-year diploma into a four-year applied degree at Lakeland College thanks to a new transfer agreement.

Officials from both post-secondary institutions signed the agreement at Lakeland College’s Vermilion campus on January 30, 2012. It takes effect immediately and makes graduates from Portage’s two-year natural resources technician diploma program eligible for admission into Lakeland College’s bachelor of applied science: environmental management program (monitoring/environmental protection major).

Upon acceptance into Lakeland’s BAppSc:EM program, Portage graduates will receive a block credit transfer for courses they completed in the NRT program.

“This agreement is all about making quality educational opportunities more accessible for northern students,” says Mel Mathison, dean of Lakeland College’s School of Environmental Sciences and Applied Research. “It’s also a great example of how colleges can work together to help students advance their area of expertise, gain more hands-on skills training, and increase their linkages with industry.”

Fatima Tarrabain, Portage’s dean of Education, Enviroment and Cultural Arts, agrees. She adds that students will also benefit from studying in a program that is accredited by EcoCanada.

“This articulation agreement provides learners with the opportunity to obtain a degree at a community college with similar best practices and student focus mandate. In addition to the many benefits to learners, this agreement enables the sharing of expertise and knowledge resources between our two institutions, allowing us to fully leverage the academic excellence at both institutions,” says Tarrabain. “We are very excited about this partnership with Lakeland College.”

Desiree Macor, a current student at Portage College, has already applied to Lakeland College and has been accepted into the applied degree program. She will begin her studies in September.

“I heard about the opportunity to transfer into Lakeland College’s applied degree program from my program coordinator at Portage,” says Macor. “I was very interested because it is important to me to further my education and to open many more doors for future job opportunities. I would also like to further my education in this field because it is a passion of mine to learn about environmental issues and to overcome them by using the knowledge that I’ll gain. I visited Lakeland during its Enviro-Citing day on March 9 and I was really happy with what I heard from current students and graduates about the work they are doing in their specific fields.”
