Province asks public to help create Social Policy Framework

Albertans are invited to share their ideas about how social policy can achieve better outcomes for Alberta’s children, families, individuals and communities.

The Speak. Share. Thrive. public engagement provides Albertans opportunities at www.socialpolicy.alberta.ca and at community-led discussions to help create a social policy framework that will guide decisions about the relevance and effectiveness of social policies and programs for Albertans.

The contributions of individuals, communities, business groups, government, non-profit and voluntary sectors will help build a framework that allows all Albertans the opportunity to participate fully in Alberta’s economy, communities and cultural life. The framework will also provide the foundation to achieve Premier Redford’s commitment to eliminate child poverty and reduce overall poverty in Alberta.

“For Alberta to continue to thrive, we need to ensure that every child grows up in a nurturing home and vibrant community - that every individual has the opportunity to contribute to our society,” said Dave Hancock, Minister of Human Services.  “This framework needs to reflect our shared values as Albertans and it is not just about vulnerable or disadvantaged families. All Albertans share the benefits when every child has the opportunity to maximize their potential and people can participate as full members of our society.” 

Albertans can take part in conversations about the social policy framework by writing in the wiki, responding to a blog, or taking the survey on www.socialpolicy.alberta.ca. The site also includes a discussion toolkit that helps individuals to hold a community discussion. The deadline to participate in Speak. Share. Thrive. is July 31.

“This interactive engagement is an exciting opportunity to build on the collaboration between partners in the social services sector to make a positive difference in the lives of individuals and families,” said Dr. Lucy Miller, President and CEO, United Way of Calgary and Area. “We look forward to sharing our ideas and helping create a social policy framework that benefits everyone in our province.”

Since December 2011, Human Services engaged approximately 10,000 stakeholders, citizens, and Government of Alberta staff to create awareness and obtain initial input on the development of a social policy framework.
